Do It Yourself Taco Seasoning

Yeah I know it is easy to go and get those single serve sized packs of taco seasoning at the grocery store. But, did you know that you can save money & make a healthier version at home? I didn’t…I needed a push. Or a friend to tell me so. Danica and I were at a warehouse type store and as we past the HUGE containers of spices we had a light bulb moment! Let’s make a HUGE batch of taco seasoning and split it!

OK!

Costco Sized Taco Seasoning

(This is the site Danica found the idea from originally www.veggieterrain.blogspot.com)

4 1/2 cups Chili Powder
2 1/4 cups Cumin
1 1/2 cups sea salt
3/4 cup black pepper
3/4 cup paprika
1/3 cup dried oregano flakes
1/3 cup onion powder
1/3 cup garlic powder
1/3 cup crushed red pepper flakes

how to make taco seasoning
Toss to combine mashing up any clumps of seasoning. Store in an air tight container for up to 2 years.  Add it to anything you need Mexican seasoning for! Tacos, soups, bean, dips or combine with ranch & sour cream (or Greek yogurt!) for a tasty southwestern dip.

Mexican spices

Since you really only use a couple of tablespoons at a time this is going to last me a while…or maybe not seeing how often I like to cook Mexican dishes at home! Smile hehe

Go on and make it! It’s easy & you may never go back to buying those little pouches again!

Smile Have a great day everyone!

BYE!

  1. I make my own taco seasoning, too! It tastes so much better than the store bought!

Genius idea to make a huge batch and split it!

  2. I love making my own taco seasoning. I don't usually make it in such a big batch though, I should though. It would be easier. I know I add coriander to mine, not sure what else is different.

  3. i don't often use taco seasoning...so I must admit to buying those packets when I need them on occasion...but I must admit to buying these little packets of seasonings from a local place that you put into sour cream, lowfat cream cheese, yogurt or oil to make flavored dips and such. This is a great idea though..and you can control the amount of salt that goes into it!

  5. I am totally going to do this. I used to buy the Epicure jar of taco seasoning. I just finished a jar a couple weeks ago and instead of ordering a new one, I'm going to fill the jar with homemade.

  6. I've made my own in the past too...then lost my recipe, so I am SO glad to find yours! I just can't bring myself to buy the chemical-filled stuff!

  7. This is also perfect for people who are on a gluten free diet no additives!

  8. I already stole the recipe from Danica, but I had to let you know I'm going to make it too. :-)

I won't make such a large batch though!

I always buy the large jar of taco seasoning at Sam's Club and just measure out what I need. This is so much better as I know exactly what is in it and I can eliminate the salt if I so choose. I love salt, but TBM isn't supposed to partake. I eliminate it when I can and add at the table for me.
